Visiting the Bridge After Dark

The St Johns Bridge opened in 1931 and remains one of the most recognisable structures in Portland. Its tall green towers, topped with pointed Gothic arches, rise above the Willamette River and connect the St Johns neighbourhood on the east bank with Highway 30 and the edge of Forest Park on the west. At night the towers are lit, and the bridge becomes a favourite subject for photographers and late walkers alike.

Cathedral Park below the span

Directly beneath the east end of the bridge sits Cathedral Park, named for the way the bridge's concrete piers and arches resemble a cathedral's vaulted ceiling. The park slopes down to the riverbank and offers one of the best ground-level views of the structure. It is a popular spot for picnics, summer gatherings and quiet evenings watching the lights reflect on the water. Practical tips for a night visit

• Dress for the river: the open water and elevation make it noticeably cooler and windier than the surrounding streets, especially from autumn through spring.
• Walking the deck: the bridge has sidewalks, but traffic is steady and the lanes are narrow, so stay alert and wear something visible after dark.
• Parking and transport: street parking is available around downtown St Johns, and several TriMet bus lines serve the neighbourhood. Check schedules ahead, as late-night service can be limited.
• Explore the neighbourhood: the small downtown strip along N Lombard St has a relaxed, village-like feel, with places to grab a bite before or after your walk.
